July 26th: Cats’ racist controversy and DiCaprio’s eye contact ban

Cats
(due out 20 December 2019)

So after we all got to enjoy last week’s uncanny valley/ropey CGI extravaganza Cats trailer, the pile-on continues.

This time people are furry-ous (lol) that lead ballerina Francesca Hayward, who was born in Kenya and is playing Victoria the White Cat, has been fur-whitewashed.

Here’s my opinion on the matter: As a straight white male, I’m too smart to wade into this debate.

Terminator: Dark Fate
(due out 23 October 2019)

Linda Hamilton is returning to the Terminator franchise in for the first time since 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and with the Terminator: Dark Fate trailers looking very promising, this might be the film that finally breaks the ‘this one is the proper sequel to T2’ streak.

Hamilton has been speaking about returning to the franchise, and how she had disagreements with director Tim Miller, who was trying to make her character ‘relatable’:

“He wanted her ‘relatable.’ That was the word he used. And I was like Sarah Connor has never been relatable! She was relatable in the first movie as a nice waitress, but what do you mean ‘relatable’?

But I would go, ‘Nope, I am not saying that.’ And a couple of times I was like, ‘I am not saying that. That’s stupid.’

“I had to step up and toe the line about what felt right and what didn’t feel right.”

Cool, so that has ruined all of my hopes that this one will finally be a worthy Terminator 2 follow-up. Thanks Linda!

The Batman
(due out 25 June 2021)

Long-time Batman film producer Michael E. Uslan has urged the notoriously quiet, reserved and patient Batman fans not to prejudged Robert Battinson’s casting in The Batman until they see him on the big screen.

“My position is this: trust the filmmaker and give the filmmaker, and the filmmaker’s vision, the benefit of the doubt. Then wait ’til you see the movie.

“And then once you see the movie, judge the hell out of it. But I think that’s really the formula going forward.

“I couldn’t be happier, I couldn’t be more enthused, as a Batman fan, that Matt Reeves is the filmmaker in charge and has selected Robert Pattinson to be his next Batman.”

Strong words there from Michael E. Uslan, who has backed the director’s choice of Batman casting, while also covering his own back so that he can throw them both to the wolves if it turns out to be a disaster.

That, my friends, is the sort of bet-hedging behaviour that maintains your position as a long-time Batman film producer.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
(due out 14 August 2019)

It’s been a wacky week on the promotion bandwagon for Quentin Tarantino’s latest extravaganza:

A source close to Leonardo DiCaprio had to deny rumours that the actor had Once Upon a Time in Hollywood crewmembers instructed to avoid making eye contact with him.

James Marsden’s unlucky streak continues, as it was revealed this week that the human star of the doomed Sonic the Hedgehog film, was cast by Tarantino to play Burt Reynolds, only to find that his entire role cut from the final film. Presumably to fit another 30mins of Margot Robbie’s feet on the screen.

Trailer of the Week

Words Words

Pick of the week is drama/thriller Light of My Life, which sees Casey Affleck navigate a post-apocalyptic world without women – which, all things considered, is probably the best thing for Casey Affleck.
